CAPITAL PUNISHMENT.

let's talk about capital punishment, yes I understand capital punishment is the ultimate punishment of death given as a sanction for a grievous offence. But wait a minute have you thought about the side effects of this inhuman action of repaying evil with evil. can the issue of capital punishment bring back the dead ones who have been unjustly wronged?

let's take a look at the criminals sitting in a cage staring at a wall marking a countdown to their day of deaths, often times when not killed immediately having a death date on their various heads can lead to lots of ills. some criminals find means of escaping and end up causing more crimes, others end up becoming mad, being locked up in a square box with no sunlight, this itself is a crime against humanity.

Also hate from prison authorities who sometimes refuse to feed the very prisoners who they guard, sometimes even denying them the use of relief and health facilities. If we opted to kill these criminals then we are forgetting the element of hope of the criminal being rehabilitated as we have seen in some instances they can change after being rehabilitated.

Can a criminal truly be rehabilitated? for example a terrorist. this remains an issue of concern, please feel free to air your opinions on whether capital punishment should be abolished or kept?

  1. I believe that the capital punishment albeit a bit harsh is a necessity in a world with people capable of great evil. It's a deterrent. A damn good one too. You're well aware of the fact that the capital punishment most times fits the crime. Now I understand that it might seem a bit harsh to pay back evil for evil, might come across as ungoldly to some but look at it this way, as a child I was quite stubborn and so whenever I wanted to do something I knew my parents weren't going to approve, I'd weigh the consequences and go on with it or not depending on how dire the punishment would be. I believe it's the same with most people including the killers. If there is a punishment less severe than death, there'd be more killers.
As for the unjust treatment from the prison authorities, well it's rather unfortunate and I can't think of a viable solution to that problem. Can a criminal be rehabilitated? I believe that question can only be answered by the criminal. We are who we are, the choices we make define us and we are ultimately responsible for those choices. We could push the blame all we want, say the environment we are in is responsible but in the end, deep down, we know we are responsible.

    1. Thanks so much for reading Mr. Basil. The positivist school of thought believes that the fear of sanction does not necessarily deter a criminal. lets isolate religious sentiments. In your comment above, you explained that you weigh the consequences of actions with punishment, most people who are hardened criminals take for example the infamous Boko Haram terrorist group dont think punishment they are willing to die for their cause. A persons environment really helps shape who a person is, for example when i was a bit younger i feared dressing indecent because of the way and manner people in the community may look at me. An individual from the Northern part of Nigeria who has been hearing the same "Christians are evil, they should all be killed" all his life wont suddenly come to the Southern part and warm up to the christian folks. To an extent you are also correct man has been given the freedom of choice and we are held accountable to our actions s well as the answers of criminal rehabilitation lies in the criminals hands.

We do employ you to keep reading and making contributions have a blessed day.
